Individual students: Some students can put considerable pressure on a classroom teacher by refusing to comply, continually getting out of their seat, perhaps aggression against peers and staff. If the normal strategies applying to other students are not effective then there is little value in continuing to use the same approaches or escalating punishments. We start from an assumption that as we are all highly social beings, everyone has a need to belong and will conform if their key needs are being met. However, some students exist in a heightened state of anxiety, unable to cope with the demands placed on them. Others may have no acceptable strategies to have needs met for belonging, control, success, recognition, safety etc. so they will develop their own strategies to gain recognition and control. Collaboration between our staff, the student, the teacher and the family can help to resolve these issues.
